Our Principles

How This Fund Works

⚖️

Agenda-Neutral

We do not favour any political, religious, or ideological cause. Applications are evaluated purely on need, feasibility, and community benefit — nothing else.

🔍

Radical Transparency

Every donation received and every grant awarded is published in the public Transparency Ledger — visible to all donors, applicants, and the community.

🤝

Community-Reviewed

Applications are reviewed by a rotating volunteer panel, not a single gatekeeper. Each application receives at least three independent assessments before a decision.

💯

Zero Admin Fees

100% of contributions to this fund are allocated to recipients. Donors Collective covers operational costs separately — your donation goes entirely to people in need.

🏃

Fast Response

Emergency applications (medical, acute personal distress) are prioritised for 72-hour review. Standard applications are reviewed within 14 days.

📋

Verified Recipients

All recipients are verified before disbursement. For individual grants, identity and need documentation is required. For organisations, 501(c)(3) or equivalent status is verified.

Fund Categories

The Process

From Application to Disbursement

01

Apply

Complete the application form with your need, requested amount, supporting documentation, and intended use. Takes 10–15 minutes.

02

Review

Three independent volunteer reviewers assess your application on need, verifiability, and fund availability. Emergency applications in 72 hours; standard in 14 days.

03

Verify

Approved applicants are asked to verify identity and provide supporting evidence. We never share your private documents publicly — only the grant amount and category are published.

04

Receive

Funds are disbursed via bank transfer within 3–5 business days of verification. You receive a disbursement letter for your records.

05

Report Back

Within 90 days of receiving funds, grant recipients submit a brief impact note. This is published in the Transparency Ledger so donors can see the outcome of their contribution.

Governance

Who Decides & How

🧑‍⚖️ Review Panel

Applications are evaluated by a rotating panel of three community volunteers. Panel members serve 3-month terms and are selected for professional competence, not affiliation. No single person has unilateral grant authority.

📊 Decision Criteria

Reviewers score each application on: Urgency (1–5), Verifiability (1–5), Community Impact (1–5), Fund Availability, and Absence of Conflict of Interest. Total score determines priority when funds are limited.

🚫 What We Do Not Fund

Political campaigns or lobbying, for-profit business ventures, legal defence in criminal cases, gambling or speculative activities, anonymous applications without any verification, or applications from fund reviewers (conflict of interest).

⚠️ Limits & Caps

Individual grants are capped at $5,000 per application and $10,000 per applicant per calendar year. Organisational grants are capped at $25,000. Larger needs are referred to partner organisations.

🔄 Appeals

Declined applicants may appeal within 30 days by providing additional documentation. Appeals are reviewed by a different set of panel members. All appeal decisions are final.

📣 Donor Voice

Donors who contribute $500+ to the fund may nominate a cause category for priority consideration. Nominations are advisory — the review panel retains full decision authority to preserve agenda-neutrality.

Why This Fund

Why the Community Fund Beats GoFundMe & Traditional Giving

Most people facing a need turn to GoFundMe. Most donors give directly to causes. Both approaches leave significant value on the table — in fees, lost tax benefits, and zero accountability. Here is a side-by-side breakdown.

✓ 501(c)(3) — Legally Tax-Deductible ✓ Zero Platform Fees ✓ HIPAA-Compliant for Medical Needs ✓ Public Transparency Ledger ✓ Verified Recipients ✓ IRS-Compliant Receipts

The Donor Advantage

What You Gain as a Donor

💰 Real Tax Savings

A $500 donation to the Community Fund saves you approximately $110–$185 in federal taxes depending on your bracket (22%–37%). GoFundMe donations to individuals save you exactly $0. Over a year of giving, this difference is significant.

🔍 Verified Impact

With GoFundMe you donate and hope. With the Community Fund, every recipient is verified before disbursement and required to submit a 90-day impact note that is published publicly — so you can see exactly what your money achieved.

📋 Clean Tax Records

Donors Collective issues an IRS-compliant PDF receipt immediately — with the EIN, date, amount, and "no goods or services" statement you need for Schedule A. No scrambling for documentation at tax time.

🏦 Zero Fees via Bank

Donate via bank transfer and 100% of your gift enters the pool. Compare to GoFundMe where 2.9% + $0.30 is taken per donation — on 12 monthly donations of $50, that's over $23 lost to fees annually.

⚖️ Agenda-Neutral Allocation

Your donation doesn't go to whoever ran the best social media campaign. It goes to whoever has the most verified, genuine need — evaluated by a neutral rotating panel using objective criteria.

🌐 Full Public Transparency

Every transaction in and out of the fund is in the public Transparency Ledger — visible to anyone, updated within 24 hours. No waiting for an annual 990. Real-time accountability, always.

The GoFundMe Problem

Why "Just Start a GoFundMe" Isn't Good Enough

The Social Network Bias

GoFundMe success depends almost entirely on social reach. A cancer patient with 2,000 Instagram followers raises $40,000. An identical patient with no social media presence raises $300. The Community Fund evaluates need, not network size.

No Tax Benefit for Donors

Donations to GoFundMe campaigns for individuals are personal gifts, not charitable contributions. The IRS does not allow deductions for personal gifts regardless of the cause. Donors lose a meaningful financial benefit that could be reinvested in further giving.

Privacy Exposure

GoFundMe campaigns typically require recipients to publicly disclose medical diagnoses, financial situations, and personal hardships to attract donors. The Community Fund protects recipient identity — only the category and anonymised amount are public.

Verification Gap

GoFundMe does not independently verify that funds will be used as stated. High-profile fraud cases (including a $400,000 homeless veteran scam) have eroded donor trust. The Community Fund verifies identity and documentation before a single dollar is disbursed.

No Accountability After Funding

Once a GoFundMe campaign is funded, there is no requirement that the recipient reports back on how funds were used. The Community Fund requires a 90-day impact note as a condition of the grant, published in the public ledger.

Fees Compound Over Time

On a $10,000 campaign, GoFundMe's payment processor takes approximately $320. On recurring giving of $100/month for a year, donors lose $43.60 to fees. The Community Fund bank transfer eliminates this entirely.

"The Community Fund is what GoFundMe would be if it were built for the community rather than for virality."
